A fanned feathered afghan
The colorful afghan was knitted by Miss Jacky D., in colors, for charity. What a warm-hearted gesture to knit for strangers less fortunate, and to think to send me a picture, too!! Thank you so much. Approximate size is 26 1/2 by 33 1/2 inches. One pair of #8 knitting needles 1 pattern equals 2 3/4 inches 3 skeins of fingering or Baby yarn makes a very lacy afghan. Thicker yarn makes it warmer. (And bigger, but then, it's not a sweater that has to be fitted, is it?)
Cast on 143. K all rows for 1 or 2 inches for your border. Then start the pattern stitching. Row 1, right side: K 10 for border, place marker, K2, *yo, K1 and P1 in ribbing for 14 sts, yo, K1, repeat from * across, end K2 instead of K1, place marker, K 10 for border. (All rows begin and end with K10 for border as well as the rest of the following pattern:) Row 2: K3, *K1 and P1 in ribbing for 14 sts, K3, repeat from * across. Row 3: K3, *yo, K1 and P1 for 14 sts, yo, K3, repeat from * across. Row 4: K4, *K1 and P1 for 14 sts, K5, repeat from * across, end K4 instead of 5. Row 5: K4, *yo, K1 and P1 for 14 sts, yo, K5, repeat from * across, end K4 instead of 5. Row 6: K5, *K1 and P1 for 14 sts, K7, repeat from * across, end K5 instead of K7. Row 7: K5, *yo, K1 and P1 for 14 sts, yo, K7, repeat from * across, end K5 instead of K7. Row 8: K6, * K1 and P1 for 14 sts, K9, repeat from * across, end K6 instead of 9. Now, here's your decrease row: Row 9: K5, *K2 tog 8 times, K7, repeat from * across, end K5. (There's your fan!) Row 10: Purl all stitches. Repeat these 10 rows for pattern until you've made 25 pattern repeats or so. Knit in garter stitch on the 143 sts for one or two inches for bottom border. Bind off. You may use a size 0 crochet hook and crochet 1 row of sl st along side edges on right side to finish. Fasten off.

One rectangular granny square afghan (hardly original but fun) You need 16 ounces white and 3 ounces variegated 4-ply worsted weight yarn and a G hook. Makes a 32" X 40" afghan. Starting at center with white, ch 53, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next ch, *ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in each of next 3 ch (3 dc group made), repeat from * to end, working ch 1, dc in 2 ch, ch 3, sl st in last ch, ch 3. Working on opposit3e side of ch, dc in next 2 ch, **ch 1, dc in each of next 3 ch, repeat from ** to end, having 3 dc groups opposite those on other side of starting ch. Work in rounds as follows: Rnd 2: Ch 3, sc in end of starting ch, ch 3, sc in top of ch 3. Ch 3, sc in ch 1 sp,* repeat between *s to opposite end, ending ch 3, sc in top of 3rd dc in 3 dc group, ch 3, sc in end ch of starting ch, ch 3, sc in top of ch 3 of previous rnd. Repeat between *s to end of rnd, ending sl st in same st as starting ch. You now see that your piece is a rectangle; mark corner stitches. Rnd 3: Sl st in first ch 3 lp, ch 3, 3 dc in same lp. (Ch 1, 4 dc in next ch 3 lp) twice, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 3 lp, repeat from * to group before corner marker. Work ch 1, 4 dc in ch 3 lps before and after corner markers each rnd to make inc. Continue to work in ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 3 lp, to end of rnd, working 4 dc in last lp of rnd, ch 1, join with sl st, drop white. Rnd 4: Join variegated yarn in ch 1 sp before last 4 dc group worked, (ch 3, sc between 2nd and 3rd dc of next group –inc completed-- , ch 3, sc in ch 1 sp) four times, *ch 3, sc in next ch 1 sp, repeat from * to end. Inc at corners as before, working extra ch 3, sc between 2nd and 3rd dc of corner group. Join with sl st and fasten off variegated yarn. Rnd 5: Pick up white in last sp before corner, ch 3, 3 dc in same ch 3 lp. Work around as before, working 4 dc in each lp on either side of corner st and 3 dc groups on ends and sides. Rnd 6: With white work as for Rnd 4, working extra ch 3, sc between 2nd and 3rd dc of corner groups. Continue to work in rnds, working Rnds 8, 12, 16, etc. in variegated and remaining rnds in white, until 38 rnds are completed.
