And yes, it's perfectly correct for boys to wear christening gowns!  Formal robes are worn by the clergy, judges, magistrates, high school and college graduates.  It is considered respectful formal wear and most appropriate for Baby's first formal occasion.  White represents purity and innocence, long length is formal, and embroidery itself has been treasured for centuries.   Motifs are carefully chosen, by you,  for meaningful symbolism.  Religious symbols, National emblems, Baby's name, etc.
