Knitting Books fromAmazon.com
From the Queen of Knitting: Elizabeth Zimmerman: She will be missed. Elaine Rowley wrote a lovely article in the Spring 2000 Knitter's Magazine, called In her own words. Do give that issue a glance if you've ever even heard of "EZ". Knitting Without Tears; Basic Techniques and Easy-To-Follow Directions for Garments to Fit All Sizes. "Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn't hutty he untroubled spirit either...When I say properly practiced, I mean executed in a relaxed manner, without anxiety, strain, or tension, but with confidence, inventiveness, pleasure, and ultimate pride." Reviewer: Linda Harvey from Philadelphia "I had been doing knit and purl stitches for most of my life with very unsatisfactory results until I found this treasure. Unlike most patterns which are for flat knitting with very rigid instructions, EZ gives guidelines for a personal approach based on knitting "in the round." No stiff seams to pop open! A stitch more or less doesn't worry her. Want a sweater for a Barbie Doll or Michael Jordan? With her formula, you can do it.And, at last, someone said that knitting scarves is *boring.* This book decreased my "knitting" tension/anxiety enormously. Knitting is now a stress reducer for me" "Really, all you need to become a good knitter are wool, needles, hands, and slightly below-average intelligence. Of course, superior intelligence, such as yours and mine, is an advantage." ...EZ Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitters' Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmermann. "Here then is a knitter's almanac," Elizabeth wrote, "a monthly record of the changing year in the light of my amiable craft." A big project month is followed by a small one; tips and techniques throughout when they apply, usually at the end.Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Workshop by Elizabeth Zimmermann Have you had a chance to see her videos? Her workshop helped me make my very first sweater. I love it, and wear it/them all the winters long. Knitting Around by Elizabeth Zimmerman This alternates technique and design with digressions, Elizabeth's not-to-be-missed reflections of her life, from childhood in England to the schoolhouse in Wisconsin. My copy is on order and I can't wait to read it.

Along with a short history of knitting and the usual list of supplies and basic instructions, this book includes a great 2-page questionnaire called the Vogue Knitting Worksheet. Lots of blanks for you to fill in for whatever project you care to design. (Yes, design!) Pages of suggested sizes if you're planning a gift and don't have the measurements handy; LOTS of instructions for techniques such as attaching a hem, sleeves to armholes, different collars, finishing techniques, plackets, buttonholes, blocking rules and a large section devoted to making the stitches, charting them, and reading charts, six knitting patterns (not for beginners), and a wonderful section on correcting errors. I learned a lot from this book. It's a good read as well as a pick-it-up-when-you-have-a-question book. Well worth the money!
